English Language Arts
This school year we are going to be using a different approach to literacy using a method called, Reader's Workshop. During reader's workshop, the students will listen to a mini lesson focusing on one of the four literacy skills as outlined by the Cafe teaching model. The cafe focuses on teaching Comprehension, Accuracy, Frequency, and Expanding Vocabulary (CAFE). After students have been assessed for reading levels based on the DRA2, we will form reading groups based on students ability level. The Reading workshop will operate as follows:
The Reader's Workshop is an important part of the day. I have carved out a 90 minute block to teach literacy skills to the students. Next to math workshop, this is one of the most important parts of the day. We will be using a variety of resources to assist us with meeting the needs of all the students.
- Mini lesson (direct teaching of focused skill)
- small group instruction (students break into small groups)
- independent practice with leveled reader books
- phonetic word play (based on ability levels)
